Mikhail Kopelman
Mikhail Kopelman
Mikhail Kopelman received his violin training in Russia where he studied with Professors Maya Glezarova, and Yuri Yankelevich at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1973 he was a second prize winner in the Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris.

A former member of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra, and the concertmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, in 1976, Mr. Kopelman was appointed first violin of the Borodin String Quartet and played with the ensemble for two decades.

From 1980 to 1993, Mr. Kopelman served on the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory, teaching both violin and chamber music. He has given master classes at the Guild Hall School of Music in London and the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh (UK). He has also given master classes in Tours, Rome, Florence, Turku (Finland), Stockholm and the Hochschules in Hamburg and Vienna.

In 1996, he joined the Tokyo String Quartet as first violinist. Since then, he has been a professor at the Yale School of Music, coaching chamber music. Mr. Kopelman has performed in many international festivals, such as the Edinburgh Festival (UK), Hong Kong, Schleswig-Holstein, Florence, Salzburg, Tours, Moscow, Ravinia, Santa Fe, Caramoor, Norfolk and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City.

He has collaborated with distinguished musicians like Sviatoslav Richter, Bruno Canino, Alicia De Larrocha, Mstislav Rostropovich, Christoph Eschenbach, Natalia Gutman, Yuri Bashmet, Gideon Kremer, Eliso Virsaladze, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Edward Brunner, Claude Frank, Richard Stolzman, Gary Graffman, Gary Hoffman and Toby Hoffman.

Currently, Mr. Kopelman is on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and serves as first violist with the Kopelman Quartet.
